You shyed away
from meeting my father

you got me into walking

So many times I've tried to burn them,
turn them into ashes and dust
but as the phoenix they rise gracefully
more vivid and colourful than before.

I've tried to drown them in vodka and lust
but each time it all seems to get better
they surface and breathe in
all the numbness reigning my body.

Once I thought of just ignoring them,
pretending they're not lurking in my mind –
all was fine until a stranger's face
reminded me of him and his caress.

From time to time they riot against me,
crawling from inside my bones to my skin
and that's when I wish I was blind,
not able to see them taunting my sight.
